Let's Talk About Asset Management

Please reach me at andrew@fuentesmorrillconsulting.ca so we can talk about this more.

Asset Management is finding the best way to use and maintain your assets to your benefit—whether they be physical, intangible or human assets. It’s the line between being reactive and proactive. It is documenting and planning the lifecycle of your assets to use them to their maximum potential. It’s about developing the future of your organization.

There are a few key reasons why asset management is crucial for municipalities:

Cost Reduction: Planning the maintenance of your assets ensures they are less likely to break down, face critical failures, or require early replacement. You may even be able to extend their lifespan! This will also reduce asset downtime as it's easier to take a few hours off for maintenance than a few days (or weeks...or months) for repairs.

Improved Planning: When you know exactly what your assets are, you have a better idea of how to care for them. Every kilometer of road, vehicle in your fleet, walking trail you maintain, or piece of  cultural infrastructure (such as welcome signs, community sculpture and murals, etc.) help you set your budget and show your stakeholders where every dollar would go.

Increased Funding: More and more funding is becoming based on the value of municipal assets and the quality of management over the assets lifetime. thus funders are demanding to see proof that municipalities have asset management plans in place.

Reduced Work Loads: an efficient asset management program can streamline workloads, automate some functions, and reduce mental load on staff while increasing effective work hours. Asset management methods can also help align the efforts of your staff towards goals of the organization.

Better Reporting: Having an asset management plan and system in place will make applying for those funds far less time consuming and reporting far more detailed.

I'm always happy to talk more about this, but I have also created an Asset Management FAQ page that you can check out by clicking on the three lines at the top left corner of this webpage.
